Teramo’s Mountains

The mountain region of our province includes two important Apennine peaks. The first, is the Gran Sasso D’Italia group made is up of the Corno Grande (2914 m alt.) with expressive glacial valleys like Val Chiarino, Valle del Venacquaro and Il Calderone, Europe’s southernmost glacier. Then, we have the Laga Mountains, a veritable kingdom of rivers and waterfalls such as the famous Morricana Falls, Scalette Falls and Volpara Falls.

The harmony of the “Sleeping Giant”

The Gran Sasso d’Italia is the quintessential mountain of Abruzzo: the majesty of it’s peaks, the strength and the gigantic basic nature of it’s being unfolds from the tips to the roots of this mountain chain. The massive calcium rock on the Teramo side of the Gran Sasso, almost dolomitic in it’s nature, dominates over the entire surrounding areas. At more than 1.500 meters in altitude we find Prati di Tivo and Prato Selva, preferred destinations of tourists and skiers from central Italy.

The enchanting areas of the Laga Mountains

Laga Mountains region, contains a series of mountains and plains at times both lush and wild, that enchant and fascinate us with the harmonious silence of countless paths immersed in rich forests and green high planes. The extraordinary colors that dominate all over this area are bright in summer and warm and enticing in fall.

The highest peak here is Monte Gorzano with it’s 2458 meters of altitude. Also Within these mountains there is Europe’s highest artificial lake: Lake Campotosto where migrating birds find a safe and calm harbor for a break during their long flight.

The Gemelli mountains

Further north we find the Gemelli Mountain chain, crossed by the Gole del Salinello, with it’s characteristic shape caused by the water erosion. Caves and nooks remind us of a distant past of traditions, religious and pagan rites.
