The Azienda Agricola Orlandi Contucci Ponno has made wines since 1782, which is when the present owners purchased the estate.
The farm has a position climatically favourable. It lies on the first mounts along the valley of the Vomano River, two kilometres away from the Adriatic Sea and less than twenty from the peaks of the Gran Sasso.
The vineyards from this position benefit from the thermo regulating influence of the sea and from the breezes coming down from the mountain to mitigate the summer heat at night. These conditions guarantee a regular and constant vegetative growing cycle of the vines, which is essential to develop the organoleptic qualities of the grapes, hence to make a wine with a rich bouquet.
The soil of the estate is gravelly alluvial with calcareous deposits. According to some analysis this is soil composition is very similar to the one found in the most prestigious wine areas of Bordeaux. For this reason, the company has imported directly from France some varieties to grow here, such as Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet.
At any stage – from ageing red wine in oak barriques to storage and bottling – winemaking is carried out paying attention to traditional principles of the most advanced winemaking techniques. Hand picking allows a selection of the grapes at harvest.
‘The consistency and authenticity of our wines as well as their appreciation by the consumers are the reasons of our sales growth’.
