In 1964, Emidio Pepe set up the Azienda Agricola Emidio Pepe in Torano Nuovo.
This family-run company makes high quality wine in the Vibrata Valley, 15km away from the sea and 25km from the mountain, in the province of Teramo. This is mostly a hilly site, not far from the border with Marches and suitable to grow Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
The quality of Pepe wine essentially comes from the vineyard, from its soil composition and sun exposure. Each element imparts to the grapes distinctive characteristics of ‘typicity’ and ‘terroir’.
The wine farm has always followed thoroughly the methods of organic farming. (The company is certified under the EU law 2092/91 by the Regime di Controllo and regularly assessed by the Institute Mediterraneo di Certificazione in Ancona).
In addition to this, the care for traditional and long-established winemaking methods enhances the quality of Pepe wine. These are:
Only hand-picking and bunch-selection at harvest
Foot-treading of the white grapes in open-top wood fermenters (i.e. Trebbiano d’Abruzzo)
Hand-destalking of the red grapes for a wine suitable to ageing (i.e. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo)
