The surrounding area
The Astronomic Observatory of Collurania is only a few km from the old town. You can get there exiting at Porta Romana and going along via Conte Contin. Crossing the bridge over the river Tordino continuing up until Collurania, boasting a splendid view of the city.
The so called “Specola” founded in 1890 by Vincenzo Cerulli, a Teramo astronomer,who in 1917 donated it to the State. You can still find working pieces inside, acquired by the very same Cerulli.
Nowadays the tecnichal staff of Collurania dedicate themselves above all to stellar astrophysics.
In the city's surroundings there are many hamlets worth visiting, on the top of the panoramic hills and in the valleys where the rivers Tordino and Vezzola flow. Beginning with Forcella, famous for its flag waving, Miano, with its church and beautiful “castle”, Poggio Cono and San Vittorino, Villa Ripa, Rapino, Frondarola, Valle San Giovanni (the ruins of San Giovanni in Pergulis), Colleminuccio, Monticelli, Varano, Colle Santa Maria, San Pietro ad Lacum, Magnanella with its “Acquachiara” and its panorama and, at last, towards the sea, Nepezzano and San Nicolò a Tordino.
