Shrine of Madonna of Holy Saturday (part of Saint Agnes’ Church) |
The presence of a prehistoric village in the hamlet of Ripoli, testifies that men have been settling around Corropoli ever since neolithic times. Today, cradled among hills, this little village has preserved numerous artistic and cultural testimonies of its long history. One of these is the Abbey Badia di Santa Maria ad Majulanum, which was built by Benedictines from Cassino on top of the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to the Goddess Flora. Further the Baroque Parish of Sant’Agnese is of great interest as it conserves two valuable wooden statues: the first one dating from 1200 represents the Virgin Mary with Child and the other dating from 1400 is dedicated to the Madonna of Holy Saturday.
Outside rises the stately bell tower embellished with precious ceramics from Castelli. It was carried out by the master Antonio da Lodi and is the first of the four famous bell towers he has executed within the Province of Teramo. The three others are in Atri, Teramo and Campli.
The square piazza Pié di Corte with its beautiful 19th-century fountain is the most evocative of the historical centre; it was built by pulling down the remains of a baronial castle.
The traditional Palio delle Botti of Corropoli is an event worth seeing; it is one of the most characteristic festivals within the Province of Teramo. Each year in July the various boroughs of the town, each one organised into a team and wearing its own costume, defy each other in battle.
