Good Friday Procession
Torna all'elenco degli eventiIt is the medieval penitential procession of Our Lady of Sorrows starting at 4.00 o’clock in the morning. The procession, a long train with the statue of the Madonna in mourning looking for her died son Jesus, starts from the Church of St.Augustine, crosses the city for more than 6 km., reaching the main city churches, to stop at the Monastery of Our Lady of Grace where comes back, pausing at the Cathedral, and returns to the starting point.
During the procession run the “tears”on a model “melico” commonly spread in popular songs. The devotion of participants is great as the emotional and dramatic impact emphasized by the light of torches and candles carried in procession .
It is a drama disclosing ancient conjunctions with the sacred medieval (Middle Ages theatre, with the representations of religious confraternities on the church square; a collective rite to win death, pain for loss and absence.
