Deep within the hilly inland of Teramo, Torano Nuovo offers one of the most charming and picturesque panoramas of the Province, surrounded as it is by valleys and hillocks covered with country houses and flourishing vineyards.

The original founders of this small town were Etrurians (the name itself might come from the goddess Turan). It is best known for wine growing and production of wine. If the story Plinio the second tells is true, according to which Hannibal would have used it to cure his horses ill with the scabies after the battle of the Trasimeno, the wine of Torano has been famous ever since ancient times.

For its rich production of wines (Montepulciano D.O.C., Trebbiano D.O.C., Controguerra D.O.C,. and colline Teramane D.O.C.G.) Torano has earned the title of “Capital of the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo”. It also received the title of “Paese del Gusto” to celebrate the excellency of the so many typical dishes it has to offer: the excellent five season spelt hams, different sorts of cheese and fine honey. 

This is why, every year, from the 12^th to the 17^th of August, Torano is literally invaded by over 70.000 visitors, attracted by the genuine flavours of one of the main wine and gastronomy showcases of Abruzzo: the Sagra del vino, della salsiccia, dei “maccheroni” e del formaggio pecorino (Wine, sausage, maccheroni and pecorino cheese festival).

The town does not only boast an excellent gastronomy but also valuable artistic and cultural treasures, and a historical centre worth visiting. Here stands the 17^th century Church of the Madonna della Grazie, originally constructed as a chapel for the Congregazione della Carità. The adjoining Museo d'Arte Sacra exhibits all those treasures that have been enshrined over the centuries by the population of Torano: sacred fittings, antique gold artefacts, and most precious of all, an altar cross moulded with silver foil over a wooden base, attributed to Nicola da Guardiagrele.

We recommend a visit to the Church of San Martino in the small village of Villa Torre. Inside have been preserved frescos dating from the 15th century, the bell tower cubicle and the 1577 family coat of arms of the Barone Cornacchia. The Church of San Massimo a Varano, built between the 10^th and the 11^th century is also worthwhile (already listed, in the year 1066, among the goods belonging to the jurisdiction of Montecassino).This monument is an typical example of the local Romanticism and has, on the west façade, a beautiful portal above which the coat of arms of Montecassino or a more recent family coat of arms once hanged.
