Pietracamela is a beautiful mountain centre, that lies on the slopes of the Corno Piccolo. The effective projects and strategies that have been applied to recover and develop its territory have been rewarded by the award “Borgo dell'anno 2007”. It is also the only Municipality to be totally included into the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.

Although some doubts remain about the origins of the town, certain is that they are very ancient  and Pietracamela boasts a beautiful unique historical centre with characteristic stone houses, narrow lanes that run through the village and small delicious Roman style churches that conserve many artistic religious treasures.

The Parish Church of San Leucio, dating from 1324 welcomes visitors at the gates of the village. Inside several interesting 17th-century paintings are conserved as well as a 16th-century stoup, decorated with aquatic animals sculpted onto the basin.

Next to the church stands Casa Torre, which was used as a sighting tower in the past. Worth a visit are the Church of San Giovanni (1432) with its beautiful stone portal, the small Church of San Rocco, constructed in 1530 when the pest struck the population, the house of  “Li Signuritte” with 15th-century mullioned windows and a majolica crucifix and finally the house of Don Ioani bearing the town's coat of arms and inscriptions.

In the neighbouring village of Intermesoli, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta dating from the 14th century can be visited.

Prati di Tivo, famous winter resort of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, lies three kilometres away from Pietracamela, immersed among the beech woods of Aschiero and the woods delle Mandorle.

At a height of 1450, Prati di Tivo is one of the favourite destinations for tourists and ski lovers of central Italy. It offers excellent accommodation capacity and a good system of ski tows (a total of six ski lifts and chair lifts) that lead to 12 kilometres of ski slopes and trails.

With the chair lift it is possible to reach the statue of the “Madonnina” that stands at an altitude of 2000 metres and is  the starting point for many trails. From here you can reach the summit of the Gran Sasso.  Actually it is possible to venture into the mountains from any given point of the Prati, following the numerous trails that run through this stupendous territory.
