Nature and Protected areas
Equipped territorial Park of the Vomano River
established in 1995, the Reserve runs along one of the main roads to the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga and protects the fluvial habitat of the middle stretch of the River Vomano (between 250 and 400 mt north of Montorio).
With its 335 hectares it is one of the biggest Abruzzo reserves of this type.
In the upper part of the protected area the river flows between the sandstone walls, shaped by the water erosion.
Along the river bed lye the river life consisting of white poplar, black poplar, red willow, white hornbean, maple tree and hazlenut, while on some stone walls grow small populations of holm oak. The microclimate of the reserve also allows for the growth of particular oaks usually found in warmer habitats.
Between the Mammals we can find the hedgehog, the mole, the southern squirrel, the fox, the beech marten and the boar, and as for the birds of the reserve the peregrine falcon, the bee eater, the dipper and the river lark.
The fish fauna is represented by the chub, the barbel, the “vairone” and the uncommon “rovella”.
The best times to visit are spring and autumn.
