Roseto degli Abruzzi
Well known as the “Lido delle Rose”, the Rose Riviera, this sea resort is one of the main tourist centres on the Abruzzo Riviera and one of the pearls of the “garden coast” of Teramo. It is famous for having one of the clearest and cleanest lidos on Adriatic coast and large soft sandy beaches that dive gently into low waters.
Certainly the seaside represents Roseto's best asset, but the part of the town that extends over the hills is also interesting and quite different. Roseto was founded 135 years ago on top of an overlooking hill as an extension of the mediaeval town of Montepagano. Today the remains of the ancient fortifications and of the four gates are still visible.
The bell tower of the Church of S. Antonio is worth seeing and the legend says that it was commissioned by Pope Sisto V. Also worthwhile is the Church of S.S. Annunziata dating from the late 16th century. Inside stands a precious polychrome wooden altar bearing statues of saints and prophets while in the sacristy hangs a tablet recalling the foundation of Roseto in 1860 by the clergy.
Further sites of architectonic and cultural interest are the Pinacoteca, inside the Villa Comunale di Roseto, where the works of several valuable local artists are exposed and the Church of S.Maria Assunta (ex Santa Filomena), which was built in the early twentieth century and treasures a characteristic terracotta altar and a painting of “the Holy Family” by the local artist Pasquale Celomi. The Museo della Cultura Materiale di Montepagano is also worth a visit.
Roseto degli Abruzzi is a dynamic and lively city that has known how to associate its name with important international cultural and sportive events. Its best asset is certainly the “Trofeo Lido delle Rose”, the oldest handball summer competition in Europe and even maybe in the world (it was organized for the first time in 1945).
Regarding culture events worth mentioning are the painting exhibitions that enrich the Villa Comunale and and the cinema festival “Roseto Opera Prima”, which hosts each year several famous figures of the Italian cinema.
The link between culture, wine and gastronomy is also extremely important for this territory and partly thanks to the famous yearly appointment “mostra dei vini tipici” of Montepagano that has been held for thirty years.
