Colledara

Rising in the Valle Siciliana, Colledara has been inhabited ever since prehistoric times and conserves today its mediaeval aspect. Its history belongs however to the charming but deserted hamlet of Castiglione della Valle, where according to the legend Lucrezia Borgia took refuge while her brother Caesar escaped. As a matter of fact the swirling vicissitudes of the Borgias are brought to life again every summer, in August during a historical commemoration set up in Castiglione, that has become an important cultural summer appointment for the whole Province.

Not to be missed is the hamlet of Villa Petto which was founded after the destruction of the Roman Pitinia that once stood at the confluence between the Mavone and the Vomano rivers. Today the remains of the bastions and the towers of the ancient castle are still visible.
