St Martin’s Church |
Although it has been populated ever since the Neolithic Age, Nereto has conserved a clearly medieval structure. Cradled between green hills, this town counts among the smallest municipalities of Italy.
Among the monuments worth visiting are the17th-century Church of Santa Maria del Suffraggio and the beautiful Church of San Martino, which was built in the 12th century and still includes monolithic columns from the late Roman period. On the façade a bas-relief representing San Martino stands out and has become the symbol of this small town of the Vibrata valley.
Inside the Parish Church are kept antique pieces of furniture, a fictile statue of the Madonna della Consolazione, two gilded wooden statues, a reliquary bust of San Martino and a painting of the lapidation of S.Stefano all dating from the 18th century while the organ dates back to the 19th century.
The beautiful Fontana Vecchia, dating from 1881 has been recently restored. Today thanks to the recent industrial growth of the territory,Nereto is well integrated into the important industrial district of the Val Vibrata.
