Once territory of the Sabines and part of the Roman colony of Hatria, Montefino rises on top of a hill towering over the valley of the Fino river. The village has preserved a typical mediaeval defensive structure including remains of the ancient Castello di Corte and a bailey tower built in the 14th century at the top of the town.
A visit to the 15th-century Castle of the Acquaviva is worthwhile as it has conserved most of its original structure including a cylindrical corner donjon.
Furthermore, hidden among the houses, the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, has a beautiful 16th-century portal. It treasures 17th-century gilded wooden relics, among which the one of S.Giacomo, and a precious 700 years old silver cross executed by Nicola da Guardiagrele.
Lovers of the Abruzzo flavours and traditions shouldn't miss the festivals that enliven the summer days of this little town: starting with the oil festival “Sagra dell'Olio” and the Threshing Festival “Festa della Trebbiatura”, not to mention the Sagra de li “maccarun alla carrature”, a variant of the typical macherroni alla chitarra.
